Oscar Piastri snatched pole position for the Qatar Grand Prix, besting Lando Norris by a tenth of a second during the penultimate qualifying session of the 2025 F1 season.
The British driver looked to have found the measure of his McLaren team-mate, but aborted his final push lap after going wide at Turn 2, opening the door to Piastri.
Max Verstappen went third fastest under the lights of the Lusail International Circuit, with George Russell due to join the Red Bull driver on the second row of the grid.
Kimi Antonelli in the second Mercedes rounded out the top five, ahead of Isack Hadjar.
Lewis Hamilton was knocked out of Q1 in qualifying for the third grid-setting session in a row. It is also the first time the seven-time F1 drivers' champion has failed to reach Q2 at consecutive grands prix since a three-round run in 2009.
Alex Albon will be investigated after the session for allegedly failing to follow the race director's instructions.
A strange red flag incident involving Carlos Sainz briefly interrupted Q3, before the final five minutes were run.
