Oscar Piastri topped the second free practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix, going half-a-tenth of a second faster than McLaren team-mate Lando Norris in a heavily-disrupted second place.

Racing Bulls driver Isack Hadjar and Lewis Hamilton were third and fourth-quickest, respectively, with Liam Lawson rounding out the top five at Suzuka.

George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz completed the top 10 in FP2, the final session on the opening day of track action at the third round of the F1.

Jack Doohan had a massive crash less than 10 minutes into the hour, bringing out the red flag for over 20 minutes.

Fewer than five minutes after the session got back underway, Fernando Alonso caused a second stoppage.

Strangely, a trackside fire made it a trio of red flags - and brought the total disruption for the hour up to nearly 40 minutes.

The session ended under a fourth red flag that emerged in the final seconds, also due to a fire. Similar to the situation at the Chinese Grand Prix last year, the grass appears to be highly flammable - potentially due to use of the chemical Bitumen, used to treat the track surface.

The wind is due to change direction for FP3 and qualifying tomorrow, but it could remain an issue. However, with adverse weather expected on Sunday for the race, the main event should not be affected.
