George Russell started the Austrian Grand Prix weekend by going fastest in Free Practice 1, as McLaren stand-in Alex Dunne starred with fourth.

Fresh off his win in Canada, Russell continued to set the pace with a 1:05.542 effort to best Max Verstappen by 0.065s with Oscar Piastri slotting into third place, 0.155s behind Russell.

It is the first FP1 session Mercedes has topped this season.

McLaren's F2 protégé Dunne was subbing in for Lando Norris as part of the FP1 rookie driver sessions, and impressed with a run to fourth, 0.069s slower than Piastri and just 0.224s down on Russell's benchmark time.

Lewis Hamilton was ninth after early gearbox gremlins for Ferrari, with team-mate Dino Beganovic also suffering issues as he was 18th.
