George Russell banked pole position for the Las Vegas Grand Prix - pipping Carlos Sainz to top spot.
With the final lap of Q3, Russell roared to P1, pipping Sainz by 0.098s with Pierre Gasly third for Alpine.
Max Verstappen and title rival Lando Norris will share row three, with Lewis Hamilton 10th after a mistake on his first Q3 lap and then another on his second - with that lap deleted for track limits.
Franco Colapinto qualified 14th fastest, but could be set for a pit-lane start following a sizeable crash at the end of Q2 that destroyed his Williams.
