Zandvoort handed bizarre 'supermarket' comparison: 'There's just no space'

Alex Albon has bizarrely compared Zandvoort, the home of the Dutch Grand Prix, to a "supermarket", claiming the track has "no space". 

The Dutch GP is the first round after the F1 summer break, in what will be Zandvoort's penultimate time hosting the pinnacle of motorsport. 

Zandvoort will fall off the F1 calendar after 2026, with the circuit having been handed a Sprint weekend next year as sign of gratitude from the championship. 

Despite circuit being narrow and incredibly challenging to overtake at, it has hosted some excellent races in recent years. 

It is a track the drivers love driving, with Albon noting it is a venue which F1 should never race at, but is excellent that it does.

"I love Zandvoort!" Albon told Viaplay. "It's one of those circuits where a Formula 1 car really shouldn't drive, but it's great that it's allowed. 

"It feels a bit like driving your car through the supermarket! There's just no space, but you can drive through it really fast. 

"It's so narrow, but on the other hand that also makes it a great circuit for the drivers."

The weather also plays a major part at Zandvoort, with high winds being common due to the circuit being alongside the sea shore. 

Heavy rain caused chaos as recently as 2023, where Max Verstappen secured a ninth consecutive victory. 

"The weather is also always interesting," he added. "The wind is very good for people with kites, but less fun in a race car! But it makes it challenging. 

"And as Williams, we like the track a lot for some reason. That doesn't really make any sense, but we'll do it with it!"
