World champion set for surprise WEC debut

A current world champion is set to make his World Endurance Championship debut next month on May 10.

Porsche has confirmed that Pascal Wehrlein will compete in next month's Six Hours of Spa Francorchamps, ahead of his highly-anticipated 24 Hours of Le Mans debut in June.

Wehrlein will partner Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor in the #6 Porsche 963, in what will be his debut in the World Endurance Championship.

The reigning Formula E champion has been preparing for his Le Mans debut for several months, which saw him make his 24 Hours of Daytona debut earlier this year.

The ex-F1 driver recently completed a private test in preparation for Le Mans at Aragon, as part of a Porsche training camp before heading to Miami where he claimed FE victory.

"In preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it is obviously first class that I can celebrate my debut in the FIA WEC at Spa-Francorchamps and get to know the way Porsche Penske Motorsport works even earlier - every competitive kilometre with the Porsche 963 counts," said Wehrlein.

"With Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor, I have two team-mates from whom I can learn a lot. I'm really looking forward to competing on such an iconic race track as the Belgian Grand Prix circuit."
