Wolff: Mercedes and Hamilton were always aligned

Toto Wolff insists the deal to extend Lewis Hamilton's Formula 1 contract with Mercedes was never in doubt and is hungry to achieve even another success together.

The news we’ve all been waiting for has finally been announced. Lewis Hamilton will drive for Mercedes in 2021 and team boss Toto Wolff is eager to achieve even more success with the seven-time world champion. Speculation had been rife for some time as negotiations over a new contract seemed to be stalling, but Wolff has given an insight into the disruption, stating it was never in doubt and discussed the extended partnership the team now has with their star driver. "We have always been aligned with Lewis that we would continue, but the very unusual year we had in 2020 meant it took some time to finish the process," Wolff said in the official Mercedes statement. "Together, we have decided to extend the sporting relationship for another season and to begin a longer-term project to take the next step in our shared commitment to greater diversity within our sport." Hamilton has long championed calls for more diversity and equality within Formula 1 and beyond and was the figurehead for the sport’s ‘WeRaceAsOne’ anti-racism initiative in 2020. And there is no better place to lead by example than at the front of the grid, with Wolff targeting even more success with the Brit. "Lewis's competitive record stands alongside the best the sports world has ever seen, and he is a valued ambassador for our brand and our partners," he continued. "The story of Mercedes and Lewis has written itself into the history books of our sport over the past eight seasons, and we are hungry to compete and to add more chapters to it."
