Wolff drops hint about end of Hamilton's contract

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has offered his view on how he will approach the contract situation with Lewis Hamilton and why both parties decided to extend the contract by a single year.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has stated that if his star driver Lewis Hamilton does decide to continue racing in Formula 1 then he will do so with the Mercedes team. The contract situation between Mercedes and Hamilton garnered a lot of attention during the off-season. Despite the speculation that he might not lineup on the grid in 2021, the seven-time world champion signed a deal with Mercedes albeit for just a single year. Wolff however feels confident that the British champion will remain with the team beyond 2021 if he does continue in the sport. "I think if Lewis continues to race he will want to do this together," Wolff said to RacingNews365.com among others. "We have agreed that we want to pick up the discussions much earlier this year to avoid a situation like we had in 2020 where we ran out of time, and be in the uncomfortable position where we have no time left before the beginning of the season. "And that's also why we did a one year contract in order to allow us to discuss the future in racing and outside of racing longer and with the right amount of time." Hamilton's contract situation is sure to be one of the main points of discussion over the course of the season. The British driver is on the cusp of becoming a record-breaking eight-time world champion and many believe he might call time on his illustrious career if he were to achieve that milestone this year.
