Oscar Piastri has warned that the form Mercedes displayed in Baku, combined with a fresh upgrade package arriving at the Sepang International Circuit, points to a daunting weekend at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
George Russell took pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix by a staggering 0.837 seconds over nearest rival Charles Leclerc, with Piastri himself only a further thousandth back in third.
The Briton went on to win the race by just under two-tenths over Max Verstappen, with Piastri sliding to P14 after locking up at Turn 1 while battling the Red Bull driver for second place.
However, despite that narrow victory margin, the W17 was the class of the field, and Mercedes has now delivered its first major technical upgrade since May's Canadian Grand Prix.
The package is understood to be aimed at closing a deficit on conventional, downforce-sensitive circuits after recent struggles against McLaren, with some estimating a lap-time gain of around three tenths of a second.
Piastri, who lost out in a straight-line speed battle at Baku partly due to the MCL40's higher-drag, higher-downforce rear-wing configuration chosen to protect tyre temperatures in the slow corners, believes Sepang's flowing, high-speed layout should play into his car's hands.
"Hopefully it'll suit us a bit more than Baku did," Piastri told media, including RacingNews365. "Obviously, there's some pretty long straights here, but there's also some high-speed corners, which generally is where we've been strong this year.
"For me, on a personal level, I felt like I found a bit more understanding of what I need to do to get lap time out of the car.
"In the race, it was pretty clear that we were struggling a bit in terms of lap time compared to, especially, Mercedes and Red Bull."
Piastri unsure where McLaren sits
Sepang's layout stands in contrast to the tight, low-speed nature of Baku. The middle sector in particular is built around a sustained, high-speed sweeping sequence, most notably through the fast Turns 5 and 6 and the double-apex Turns 7 and 8, where cars need strong aerodynamic downforce and a stable platform to carry speed through the apex.
The circuit also demands that teams strike a balance, since it pairs those high-downforce sections with two long straights, meaning a car's aerodynamic efficiency matters just as much as outright cornering grip.
That combination is expected to suit McLaren's strengths this year far more than the stop-start demands of the Baku street circuit did, and explains Piastri's optimism heading into the weekend.
But the timing of Mercedes' upgrade adds another layer of intrigue. The revised bodywork and sidepod package has been designed to sharpen cornering performance without sacrificing straight-line speed.
With Russell having already demonstrated imperious one-lap pace in Baku, the prospect of Mercedes adding further performance at a circuit that should theoretically favour McLaren is clearly weighing on Piastri's mind.
"But I think here should suit us a bit more than Baku; where exactly will we sit? I don't know," the Australian added.
"Obviously, Mercedes is bringing upgrades, from what I hear. So, if they're on pole by eight tenths last week, that's not a great sign.
"So, let's wait and see. But I think it should suit us a bit better. And I think, for me, on a personal note, I felt happier in... maybe not happy, obviously, with the end result, but I feel like I had a bit more understanding."
