Williams F1 boss hopes Russell gets Mercedes opportunity

Jost Capito, team boss at Williams, would be pleased to keep George Russell at the team for a fourth season, but is also keen to see the British driver progress.

Williams team principal Jost Capito is hoping that George Russell will be given a seat at Mercedes in 2022. Russell has been with the Grove-based outfit since making his Formula 1 debut in 2019 and recently scored his first points for the team at the Hungarian Grand Prix, which proved to be an emotional moment . Whilst Capito would love to retain Russell's services, he also believes that the British driver is ready for an opportunity with a leading team. "I wish that George gets the [Mercedes] seat because he’s in the position now, in his time of career, where he can handle to be in a top team and fight for the championship," Capito told media including RacingNews365.com . "I would never hold a young driver back if he can have this type of opportunity. So I hope for him, that he gets this opportunity. "From the team’s side, we would very much love to keep him, so if he goes to Mercedes and gets the offer, he gets the full support from us. If not, he gets the full support from us. "That’s why we can easily wait for that driver decision whichever way it comes. We’ll be okay." With Russell's future still unclear, there is uncertainty over Williams' line-up in 2022 both in regards to Russell and teammate Nicholas Latifi. However, with the team's fortunes seemingly improving, Capito isn't worried about filling any vacancies as he believes the seats are in high demand. "I think every driver who hasn’t got a big seat for next year or has an option for next year is talking to us at the moment," Capito said. "It seems the Williams seat is the most aspired seat in F1 right now for a team that has to fill a seat." There is not expected to be an announcement about Russell's future until after the summer break.
