Mercedes started the 2026 Formula 1 season how many expected them to: by claiming a one-two finish at the Australian Grand Prix.
The Silver Arrows converted first and second on the grid into the top two spots on the podium, with George Russell securing victory from pole ahead of Kimi Antonelli.
Russell qualified eight tenths clear of Red Bull's Isack Hadjar in third, with Antonelli three tenths adrift of his teammate, highlighting Mercedes' one-lap pace advantage.
Ferrari had the pace to be within eight tenths if not for a deployment issue, although the gap likely would have remained over half a second.
In the race, Russell lost the lead at the first corner to Charles Leclerc, while Lewis Hamilton overtook Antonelli.
Leclerc held the lead across the opening stages, although both Ferraris dropped back to third and fourth behind the Mercedes duo after not pitting during two virtual safety cars.
In the end, Leclerc finished 15.5 seconds adrift of Russell, with Mercedes having secured maximum points at Melbourne's Albert Park.
It was the outcome many feared going into the new power unit regulations, convincing many drivers that dominance is on the cards for the German manufacturer.
Hamilton is confident that Ferrari can catch Mercedes, while Lando Norris conceded that McLaren is very far behind.
Will Mercedes be caught in time for a title fight this year?
