Vettel still adjusting to Aston Martin: I've got a lot still left on the table

After a less than stellar showing during winter testing, Aston Martin avoided any major issues during Friday practice in Bahrain. Sebastian Vettel admits he's still got a lot of pace to find as he settles into life with his new car.

Sebastian Vettel has admitted that he still feels his pace is erratic as he continues to figure out his new Aston Martin car. Having missed huge chunks of pre-season testing as his new AMR21 suffered issues with its gearbox, electrics and turbo over his day and a half at the wheel, Vettel is still familiarising himself with the car he has christened 'Honey Ryder'. Vettel finished his Friday down in 14th place but, encouragingly, was less than four tenths behind Lance Stroll who finished in eighth place. Vettel believes every lap he gets is adding to his increasing knowledge of his new car. "We tried to get the most out of the time that we had," Vettel told RacingNews365.com and others. "So yeah, I think every lap still helps me get introduced to the car and get into a rhythm. I'm trying a lot of things. So still, I think there's a lot to try and a lot to learn." With practice time further reduced for 2021, down to two sixty minute sessions instead of ninety minutes, Vettel said there's no point in moaning about it. "It is what it is, so yeah, I think we are obviously now looking into some of the stuff that we tried in the afternoon or in the evening, and hopefully, we'll be a bit more clear and calmer tomorrow, but I think that's probably true for all the rest of the midfield as well." With the entire midfield covered by less than a second, Vettel acknowledged that every single bit that he can find from here could have huge implications in terms of position. "I feel that there's a lot left on the table just to get used to the car and being able to squeeze the limit," Vettel explained. "Right now it seems a bit up and down. Sometimes I'm really good and other corners I'm far out. But that's normal. Hopefully, come tomorrow, with more consistent running, I'll able to squeeze the limit everywhere."
