Max Verstappen believes Red Bull performed 'worse than expected' in Singapore Grand Prix practice after only managing third and eighth quickest times in the two sessions.

The Dutchman was closer in the opening session after he set a best time that was just 0.126s off Charles Leclerc, but that gap increased in the later session to 0.732s off Carlos Sainz when the field switched to the Soft tyres.

Verstappen could be heard over the team radio complaining about the rear balance, while he aborted his final run on the Softs due to a steering wheel issue in FP2.

Red Bull also ran a modified floor on both cars, with Verstappen fitting it to his car in FP1 and Perez in FP2.

Verstappen: We never really got the car together

"It was unexpected today, I was just struggling a lot with the balance of the car," Verstappen told F1 TV.

"We tried quite a few things in FP2, some worked and some didn't and we never really got the car together. So we've got quite a few things to figure out."

When asked if he was surprised with the pace from Ferrari after they admitted Singapore might be a tough track, Verstappen responded: "Ferrari is very fast, I think we're just way worse than we expected."
