Verstappen hails 'incredible' Red Bull pace after victory in Baku

After missing out on a win at the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Max Verstappen was able to take victory this time around and further extend his lead in the championship.

Max Verstappen has praised the "incredible" pace of his Red Bull after leading a 1-2 for the team in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Dutchman passed teammate Sergio Perez for the lead on Lap 15, and from there had a mostly unchallenged drive to victory. A double retirement for Ferrari due to mechanical issues also enabled the Milton Keynes-based squad to add even further to their points tally in the championship standings. Having missed out on victory at last year's race in Baku due to a late tyre failure, Verstappen was thrilled to take P1 this time around. "You can never make up what you lost last year, but I think today we had an incredible pace in the car," he told Sky Sports F1 after the Grand Prix. "We could really look after the tyres and we could chip away at it, [and] pass for the lead. "But then, of course, also [we were] maybe a tiny bit lucky because of the retirement [for Ferrari], but I think, nevertheless, our car was really quick today, so I could have closed that gap. "Then of course you have a race on your hands but, overall, [I'm] really happy with how the balance of the car was today."

Verstappen full of praise for Red Bull car

When asked what had clicked for him on Sunday in Baku, Verstappen explained: "I don't know, just tyre behaviour together with just general grip of course of the car. "And that's what you need around here, that you can look after your tyres. So at the end to have a 1-2 as a team as well, [it has been a] really, really good day for us." Verstappen is not going to get his hopes up too much for the next race in Canada, though. "I think every weekend is a bit different," he added. "You really have to be precise. You really have to be on it with little things for the race management as well, so it can swing around every single race."
