Verstappen critical: Red Bull need a faster car

The Red Bull driver believes his team face a clear deficit to Mercedes on outright race pace after losing out to Lewis Hamilton during Sunday's Spanish GP.

Max Verstappen has made it clear that Red Bull need a quicker car if they want to win the 2021 Formula 1 world championship. The Dutch driver was overtaken by Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages of the Spanish GP after an enthralling race-long battle. He feels Red Bull simply need a better package to beat Mercedes. "We need a faster car, it's very simple," Verstappen told RacingNews365.com and other select members of the press. "Just too slow, that's how to sum it up. "I tried really everything to manage things as good as I could, to look after the tyres but it's just not enough when behind you they are just pushing you in. You see clearly that Hamilton had a bit more pace." Verstappen made the better getaway and took the lead with a great overtake into Turn 1. However, Mercedes opted to pit Hamilton for a second time and Verstappen was unable to respond to the seven-time world champion's pace. "Even if we did a second pitstop, I don't think I would have caught Lewis up because on the mediums we were just slower," said Verstappen. "For Lewis to be that close on a track like this all the time, within two seconds, sometimes having DRS, I think it shows that there was not much to make a difference. "I think we shouldn't be happy with second place at the moment but nevertheless we tried everything. Overall, here we were just lacking a little bit of pace in the race, and it has been like this so far this season. "It seems like in qualifying, we're quite competitive and in the race we're struggling a little bit more."
