Formula E faces a massive leap in technology for the 2023 season, as the introduction of the Gen3 era sees the all-electric cars reach their fastest top speeds yet. Along with a lighter chassis, the cars are set to reach top speeds of 280kph with a battery output of 450kw, with double the regen capacity. Current World Champion Stoffel Vandoorne believes the leap in technology compared to the previous cars will be a big challenge for drivers, especially as they will be looking towards 'fast charge' pit stops in the future. "In 2023 it's going to be a big change, not only for me personally just because of changing teams, but for everyone really with this new generation of car," he told media, including RacingNews365.com . With Mercedes exiting the series at the end of the 2022 season, Vandoorne is making the leap to DS Penske along with two-time champion Jean-Eric Vergne.
Gen3 cars have 'a lot of power, but no grip'
The Gen3 cars were recently tested at Valencia ahead of the opening round of the season at Mexico City on the 14th January. Vandoorne said the power compared to the grip levels will be difficult for drivers to get used to, with it set to be one the main "unknowns" heading into the first race. He explained: "At the moment, after testing they feel quite tricky, very challenging to drive and they've got a lot of power but not so much grip. It's definitely going to be challenging out there, especially on the street tracks. "It's really a little bit of an unknown where we're going to be exactly, but I think that's the beauty of Formula E, you never really know what it's like and we'll find out at the first race."
