Toto Wolff delivers update on Mercedes team orders stance

Toto Wolff banned George Russell and Kimi Antonelli from yo-yo racing at the Belgian Grand Prix, fearing the threat of Ferrari or Max Verstappen could put victory in jeopardy.

The Mercedes boss shared the clear directive after the race at Spa-Francorchamps when providing an update on the Brackley-based squad's position on team orders, even though Russell retired on the first lap.

Following the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, where his two drivers lost time to Lewis Hamilton fighting for second place, the Austrian wanted to avoid a repeat scenario.

The 54-year-old felt that Antonelli, who won his sixth grand prix of the season in the Ardennes Forest, would have taken victory in Spain had he not been held up battling Russell — and, of course, not ultimately retired with an unrelated reliability issue.

"After the learning that we had in Barcelona, where we lost so much time, the mission that we set for [the Belgian Grand Prix] was that we were not going to lose time with each other," Wolff told media, including RacingNews365.

"We didn't want any yo-yoing and then have a Ferrari or a Red Bull breathing down our neck and losing a victory, as it happened in Barcelona. Without the DNF, Kimi would have won the race."

Wolff insisted that despite setting out that definitive marker for Antonelli and Russell, Mercedes would not enact team orders that would take victory away from one on behalf of the other, even if the drivers' championship maths would benefit from doing so.

Whilst not a be-all-end-all ruling out of letting the pair race, it underlines that the team has taken steps to govern how the two drivers go head-to-head on track.

"So, since Barcelona, we would in any case always give preference to the race victory, and if it meant that Kimi or George were ahead, this is what we would do; this is a constructors' championship as much as a drivers' championship," Wolff added.

"We would never take a victory away from any of the drivers. So if it is George who is ahead, even though he's behind in the championship, at that stage of the season, we wouldn't do that."
