Toto Wolff has highlighted how quickly F1 teams can "turn things around" during a regulations cycle, singling out top-four rival McLaren after it "reemerged like a phoenix" in 2023.
The Mercedes team principal used the Woking-based squad as an example to illustrate the mobility of the pecking order in the championship after Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur defended the cost cap by shedding light on the convergence between teams seen during the contemporary ground effects era.
By the end of 2025, less than a second separated the entire field, underlining the competitive nature of modern-day F1.
Wolff, building on his counterpart's point, explained that even at the dawn of a new age, a midfield outfit could be competitive within half a year.
"Totally agree with Fred," the Austrian told media, including RacingNews365, after he was asked why big teams still have an advantage with the cost cap in place.
"And obviously, over the years, you gain knowledge, but there are many very competent teams and many very competent people on the grid.
"You can see how quickly you can turn things around."
Addressing McLaren, Wolff likened the reigning constructors' champions to a phoenix, the legendary bird that rises from the flames.
"McLaren was really struggling for some years, and then, within a couple of races, the team reemerged like a phoenix, and it has been winning championships since then," the 54-year-old pointed out.
He added, "So there's always equal opportunity for everyone.
"Someone who is in the midfield today or is not as competitive as they would wish to be, who knows six months down the line where they could be."
Their respective teams, along with McLaren and Red Bull, are expected to continue leading the way when the season commences with the Australian Grand Prix, whilst Haas and Alpine are poised to lead the midfield — and by Wolff's assessment, the fight to break into the sharp end of the grid.
