Mercedes confirm major decision over F1 upgrade plan

Toto Wolff has confirmed Mercedes deliberately weighted upgrades to the W17 towards the second half of the F1 season, but says the team must be strategic about when to deploy them as Ferrari and others push hard in the development race.

Speaking after the Hungarian Grand Prix — where Kimi Antonelli secured a podium finish in third, and George Russell came home seventh — the Mercedes team principal addressed the Brackley-based squad's approach to the update race amid growing pressure from rivals.

Wolff has been vocal in recent weeks about the pace of Ferrari's upgrade push. At the Austrian Grand Prix, he questioned how the Scuderia was able to maintain such a consistent and steady stream of developments, and suggested the Italian team would surely reach the limit of the cost cap before too long if it continued in its trajectory.

He noted at the time that the Prancing Horse appeared to be the only frontrunning team not slowing down its development rate, while the Silver Arrows, McLaren and Red Bull have adopted a more measured approach.

With Mercedes leading the constructors' championship on 379 points, 72 clear of Ferrari, Wolff was asked at the Hungaroring whether his team can keep up in the upgrade battle.

"Well, I hope so," Wolff told media, including RacingNews365. "We just need to be really strategic about when to bring the upgrades.

"When do we think they will have the biggest impact on performance, rather than just throwing it in at every grand prix like in the past; you cannot do this.

"So you will have to eventually put an upgrade in, and probably you leapfrog the others a little bit, and then it kind of flattens out, and the other ones come on stronger."

Mercedes has brought upgrades to the W17 in distinct phases this season. A substantial aero and cooling package arrived during pre-season testing in Bahrain, followed by smaller incremental updates through the early flyaway rounds, including a modest step at Miami.

The team's most significant in-season package landed at the Canadian Grand Prix, featuring a redesigned front wing, revised suspension covers, updated floor and rear wing, weight-reduction measures including a lighter gearbox, and was estimated to be worth around 0.3 seconds per lap.

Since then, Mercedes have largely held back from deploying further major components, a stance Wolff has framed as a conscious decision rather than an inability to produce parts. He previously stated the team was "running hard on updates in the tunnel" but deliberately choosing not to deploy them yet.

"So yeah, we're bringing upgrades," Wolff added. "We're closely monitoring how much we can bring. At the moment, cost cap-wise, we're in a good spot.

"We have tried to have it a little bit more second half of the season weighted. Let's see if this is enough."
