Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes pole position is possible for the Canadian Grand Prix, but has insisted that it will demand a "flawless" lap to secure it.
The Silver Arrows have looked highly competitive throughout the free practice sessions, mainly on George Russell's side of the garage.
Russell topped second practice and was third in final practice, just under two-tenths adrift of McLaren's Lando Norris.
Mercedes has a good recent history at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve when it comes to outright pace, with Russell having secured pole 12 months ago.
Wolff feels confident in the Brackley-based outfit's chances, especially after a disappointing final run in third practice.
"My feeling is actually very good," Wolff told Sky DE. "We were in a good position for the whole session, although our last run was not quite right. But in the end we're only two tenths behind Norris, so that's a good start."
Russell has consistently been the quickest in the final sector and has been carrying the most speed through the final corners, with him appearing to be comfortable with the W16.
He is Mercedes' hope of pole, with Kimi Antonelli having been four-tenths adrift of Russell throughout the practice sessions.
"I believe we should be able to get through Q1 without too many problems," added Wolff. "We have the pace to get to Q2, although we have to put in a flawless lap and that's not easy."
"But pole position is definitely possible! You always have to be careful not to go from happy to very sad, but the car is fast. I think we can compete at the front, but everything has to be right."
