Just six days after the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia was heavily disrupted by a torrential downpour, the weather struck again over the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Just 15 minutes before the start of the Singapore Grand Prix sprint, the F1 first race of its kind in the island state, rain started to fall and very quickly became torrential.
The 11 teams, who had been preparing the cars on the grid, were again forced to scramble, erecting awnings to keep the machinery, mechanics and drivers dry.
Eight minutes later, the FIA confirmed there would be a delayed start due to the rain, pointing out there to be "a large amount of standing water around turns 2 and 3".
Although the rain eased, it continued to fall steadily. A second tour of the track from the medical car highlighted that issues given the standing water in certain places.
Another inspection lap was confirmed for quarter past the hour, after which the medical car reported conditions had improved, and there would be a formation lap at half past the hour.
The FIA confirmed there would be two formation laps behind the safety car. The drivers were then informed there would be a standing start.
