Why Steiner disagrees with Horner’s budget cap concerns

Haas have no intention of missing races in 2022, despite climbing costs relating to freight and logistics.

Guenther Steiner says missing races will not be an option for Haas in 2022 as he hit back at Christian Horner's warning that some teams could skip events if F1 does not lift the budget cap. Spending measures on Formuka 1 teams have been tightened severely in recent seasons. Having started at $145 million in 2021, the cap is currently $140m, and is set to reduce further to $135m in 2023. In April, Horner requested that the budget cap be reviewed, highlighting that inflated costs around freighting and logistics could possibly stretch teams' finances. And now he has warned that some outfits may be unable to compete in all 22 races this season, should the cap not be raised.

Steiner: I have to make it work, one way or another

Despite Horner's warning, Steiner says Haas will race at all events this season as he batted away suggestions that teams now find themselves unable to operate within the means of the budget cap. “I don’t have an option to tell my boss that I won’t make it to the end of the season. That’s my job,” said the Haas Team Principal, when speaking to members of the media, including RacingNews365.com . “I don’t want to speak for Fred [Vasseur, Alfa Romeo boss] but if you don’t finish the season, the next year you don’t get any money. What does that mean? It means you’re out of business. "My solution is that I need to make it work one way or another. And if you don’t like it, you get the next CEO. Simple.”

Haas will be disappointed if cost cap increases

As one of the sport's less lucrative spenders, the new cost cap was engineered to help level the playing field for teams like Haas. Steiner admits that he is cutting his cloth accordingly to ensure Haas are present at every race weekend. He continued: “I will be disappointed if the cost cap keeps going up because then we haven’t achieved what we set out years ago when we made the new commercial agreement.”
