Schumacher: Verstappen should adapt to Perez's driving style

Sergio Perez's win at the Monaco Grand Prix has brought him closer to the title fight, moving him to just 15 points away from his teammate, Max Verstappen.

Ralf Schumacher believes that Max Verstappen may have to change his driving style in order to be more like that of Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez. Perez's win in Monaco leaves him just 15 points behind Verstappen in the fight for the World Championship, and in fine form behind the wheel of the RB18. After just seven rounds of the 2022 season, the Mexican driver is just one podium away from matching his total for 2021 and has now put pen to paper on a new deal with the team. His recent performances should put Verstappen on high alert, according to Schumacher. The German, who raced in 180 Grands Prix, wrote in his Sky Sports F1 column: "I don't think Sergio will end up showing the consistency that Max Verstappen has. But, in Monaco, he was the better driver all weekend."

Schumacher: Verstappen should adapt

Schumacher thinks that Perez's victory should leave Verstappen looking to discover the secret as to why the Mexican has taken such a big step forward over the winter. "Max should take this as an opportunity to learn a few things from his teammate," continued Schumacher, who says the sport's newest cars appear to suit Perez more. "Max has a very aggressive driving style. In the past, he got along very well with the heavier cars. "The new concept of the vehicles, on the other hand, suits Sergio more. As a driver who is very good at protecting the tyres, he can get more out of the car. "Therefore, Max should try to adapt Sergio's driving style in certain sections of the route and drive a little more slowly into one or the other corner."
