Sauber F1 team The latest Formula 1 news about Sauber

Sauber F1 were a Swiss-based racing team founded by Peter Sauber in 1970 that entered Formula 1 in 1993. The outfit operated under its own name until a rebranding to Alfa Romeo Racing was made for the 2018 season.

The team entered the sport as an independent following its owner’s successful collaboration with Mercedes to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1989 and 1990. While a further collaboration into F1 didn’t fully materialise immediately, the German manufacturer did help Sauber’s foray into the sport in 1993.

Despite an impressive fifth place finish in the team’s first ever race at the South African Grand Prix, they failed to replicate that competitiveness through the season and started the 1994 season with official factory backing from Mercedes.

Sauber then struck an alliance with Red Bull where the energy drink’s owner Dietrich Materschitz purchased a majority share in the team in 1996, while also teaming up with Ferrari for its engine between 1997 and 2005.

Notably the team gave a young Kimi Raikkonen his debut in Formula 1 during the 2001 season despite protests from FIA chief Max Mosley and other drivers that he would prove a danger to others on the grid, prompting Red Bull to sell its stake to Credit Suisse in protest.

Credit Suisse’s stake was bought out by BMW with Peter Sauber retaining a 20% stake in 2006, becoming a factory team until 2009 when the founder repurchased the stake from BMW. It scored its sole race victory to date with Robert Kubica winning the Canadian Grand Prix in 2008.

Between 2010 and 2019 the team once again ran as an independent with Ferrari engines, while Swiss investment fund Longbow Finance bought both Peter Sauber and Monisha Kaltenborn’s share in the company to become sole owner in 2016.
