Sargeant ‘lucky’ to avoid terminal damage in Singapore mistake

Logan Sargeant lost his front wing early on in the Singapore Grand Prix, but felt he was lucky to escape further damage.

Logan Sargeant has said he was lucky to escape with nothing more than front wing damage following his crash during the Singapore Grand Prix. On Lap 20 of the race, Sargeant locked up and hit the barrier at Turn 8 resulting in a dislodged front wing that became stuck underneath the car. Although he got going again, the resulting debris forced race control to deploy the Safety Car that allowed the leading drivers to change from their Medium to Hard compound tyres, with the American eventually crossing the line in 14th, just ahead of Fernando Alonso. Speaking to media including RacingNews365 , Sargeant explained that he simply braked too late. "It was just my mistake, the tyres were getting old, the limitations were coming out," he explained. "We were getting close to [pitting] and I must have pushed my braking point a couple of meters too far. "I locked the inside front and I was committed to the corner and lucky to get away with just front wing [damage]. "It's a shame you know, a small mistake is really costly again, but gave it absolutely everything I had to the end to try and recover. I'm proud of those two last stints."

Sargeant proud of weekend

Sargeant added that he didn't know the front wing was stuck underneath the car until the end of the lap. "I had no idea - they [Williams] told me towards the end of the lap it was under the car. "I could feel something was wrong, almost like the car wanted to lift off, so I was just taking it pretty easy." Sargeant is not yet confirmed for the next year's campaign as he looks to secure a contract extension with Williams. Despite his race being marred by a mistake, Sargeant believes that he drove strongly throughout the weekend. "Honestly, it's been a good weekend," he said. "I feel like I've built up nicely. I got comfortable at the track. It was hugely unfortunate with those missed shifts in qualifying which really killed us. "I had good race pace, it was just one small mistake again that caught us out."
