Logan Sargeant brought an early end to the first stage of the first Sprint Shootout at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix by crashing out at Turn 15. The American had looked set for an impressive showing just a day on from securing a Q2 spot for the first time in his career and was just a tenth slower than teammate Alex Albon in 11th when sliding into the wall at the downhill, off-camber end to the middle sector. Sargeant was left unimpressed with the etiquette of the Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc as they sat in "the middle of the track", causing enough distraction for the rookie to make the error. The incident brought out the red flags with 25 seconds left in SQ1, signalling an early end and leaving Zhou Guanyu, Valtteri Bottas, Yuki Tsunoda, Pierre Gasly and Nyck de Vries in the elimination zone. Williams now face a race to get Sargeant's car ready for the 100km sprint later in the day with extensive damage to the right-hand side and rear, including likely gearbox damage.
Noooo! Logan has hit the wall and has damaged the rear suspension. Thatโs a red flag and the end of his session ๐ #WeAreWilliams #AzerbaijanGP ๐ฆ๐ฟ โ Williams Racing (@WilliamsRacing) April 29, 2023
