Sainz: Ferrari have higher priorities than beating McLaren

The Ferrari driver claims his team have bigger targets than beating McLaren in the Constructors' Championship this year.

Carlos Sainz believes Ferrari have bigger priorities than beating McLaren for third place in the Constructors' Championship as they tie on points going into the second half of the 2021 Formula 1 season. Ferrari are one of the most improved teams from last year when they finished sixth in the Constructors' Standings, their worst result since 1980, But Sainz's second podium of the year at the Hungarian Grand Prix, following Sebastian Vettel's disqualification, was more evidence for Ferrari's upturn in form. "That battle is still on and it’s always going to be on until the end of the season. I think we are very close in performance,” Sainz told RacingNews365.com and other select members of the press. “But as a team, we have higher priorities than beating McLaren to third in the constructors. I think we want to keep improving as a team and we want to keep building this this team to try and be as professional and as good as complete as we can for the opportunity to come next year to go and win the title. We are ready for it. Team principal Mattia Binotto has openly spoken about having the right spirit at Ferrari to prepare for a title challenge in 2022 and beyond. Sainz also sees that focusing on their own problems rather than their rivals is a bigger factor in the long-term. “So first comes the improvements as a team and then really the other one should fall as a consequence," said Sainz. "But we are not really obsessed with the fight and we are focussed fully on trying to improve on trying to to be the best thing that we can be before the end of the season.”.
