George Russell suffered a surprise setback in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix after being eliminated in Q1. The Mercedes driver set his final lap on a drying Hungaroring too soon, causing the Briton to tumble down the timesheets. Several drivers improved on their final laps, which were set after Russell had crossed the chequered flag. Once all drivers had completed their final lap times, Russell was down in a surprising P17. Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton safely progressed in second. Russell accepted responsibility immediately for his elimination and stated over the team radio: "Yeah. Sorry about this session, guys. It's on me." It was a chaotic opening session in qualifying due to a light rain shower, which caught out Sergio Perez who crashed heavily at Turn 8.
