Russell reveals biggest lesson from 'difficult' 2022 season

It was a tough debut season with Mercedes for George Russell in 2022, but the Briton believes that there was a lot to take away and learn for the future.

George Russell has revealed the biggest lesson he learned from a "tough" 2022 Formula 1 season for Mercedes. The team struggled to win a race for most of the campaign as they combatted various problems with the W13 in the early stages. Russell eventually broke Mercedes' winless drought with victory at the Brazilian Grand Prix, as the team appeared to start to turn things around towards the end of the season. The Briton is keen to learn from his experience during this period of struggle, in a squad that has been one of the most successful in recent years. "The things that I learned most from always were those difficult races and the races that I say, relatively speaking, failed, or underperformed in," Russell told media, including RacingNews365.com . "Looking back on those races, I would say most of the reasons were from trying too hard. "That was a big lesson I learned is that sometimes, the harder you try and the more you push, sometimes the result isn't better."

Russell: You've got to be disciplined in your approach

Russell continues to say that he believes being "disciplined" is important when trying to rectify problems, as it could lead to unfulfilled potential later down the line. "You've got to be very disciplined with yourself sometimes in your approach of knowing how hard to push yourself," he added. "It's the same if you went to the gym every single day and was doing the maximum benchpress, at one point you're probably going to injure yourself and it's not the most efficient way to get stronger. "That's representative of racing. If you go out there and you drive the thing in anger, pushing it beyond the limit every single lap, that is not the fastest way to drive." Mercedes will be looking to improve their chances with the W14, which features some striking design changes for this season .
