Rafael Camara blotted his F1 debut by crashing in the second qualifying session ahead of his home grand prix in São Paulo.
Camara, who will replace the axed Esteban Ocon at Haas on a permanent basis next season, was given his opportunity by the team for the race at Interlagos.
Haas drafted in Ryo Hirakawa over the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend after team principal Ayao Komatsu decided the Frenchman would not continue following Friday's practice session.
In treacherous conditions in São Paulo, Camara performed superbly to reach Q2 and was fighting hard in the session when he aquaplaned off the circuit at the fast Junçao.
Hurtling across the grass, Camara hit the brakes and in the sodden conditions was a passenger as he buried the nose of his car into a barrier bringing out the red flags.
In Q1, fellow Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto also went off at Junçao, spinning sideways into the same barrier hit by Camara, damaging the rear wing on his Audi, leading to him retiring after making his way back to the garage.
