With the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic still affecting the globe, Formula 1 has had to alter its calendar accordingly.

The season opener in Australia has been pushed back while the Chinese Grand Prix has been left off the calendar completely. This has left a vacancy that will now be filled by Portugal when Formula 1 revisits the Portimão race track for a second year running, F1 have confirmed.

The race will play host to the third round of the season and will take place between April 30 to May 2, 2021.

F1 said it was working closely with both the promoter and the Portuguese Government regarding fan attendance, with a decision on fans at the race to be made "in the coming weeks".

Stefano Domenicali, F1 CEO and President, said he was hopeful fans would be present once again for the Portimão race after 27,000 fans were let in for the track's return to the calendar in 2020.

"We are confident and excited about our 2021 season, having shown last year that we could deliver 17 races safely and bring our millions of fans thrilling racing at a difficult time," he said.

"We hope to welcome fans to Portimão again this season in a safe way and are working with the promoter on the details of that plan."
