Oscar Piastri used Max Verstappen for a valuable reference point when the rain started to hit the Monaco Grand Prix. The rain arrived at the track on Lap 51 of the race, initially only affecting the middle sector but creating treacherous enough conditions for drivers. Piastri was 11th at this point and got lapped by Verstappen, but managed to utilise the Red Bull driver to understand how to drive in the wet with slick tyres. “Having Max right in front of me was actually quite useful in some ways,” Piastri told media, including RacingNews365.com . “That was my first time on slicks on a rainy track, in an F1 car, and having Max there… I obviously knew that if there’s going to be anyone that’s probably going to be okay, it’s probably going to be him.”
Piastri 'not pleased' with driving during difficult weekend
Piastri managed to finish 10th and in the points on his Monaco debut after Yuki Tsunoda suffered from brake issues during the closing stages of the race. The Australian believes it was one of his most difficult race weekends from his debut season so far, having been off the pace throughout the weekend. “From a personal note after all the practice sessions, I wasn't very pleased with my driving. Like consistently six tenths off was not a very nice feeling," Piastri added. "So then to bring it a lot closer for qualifying, and then end up with point today is a very, very positive step forward. "The race itself was probably the most tricky of the year as well. But, you know, these are the weekends where you learn the most."
