Perez: I never expected to make front row

Red Bull's Sergio Perez has admitted to being surprised by how well qualifying went, after snatching a front row position for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez was left surprised by how well qualifying went on Saturday at Imola, after taking a front row slot for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The Mexican driver crossed the line at the end of Q3 to finish less than half a tenth behind polesitter Lewis Hamilton, and will start the race on the soft compound with the Mercedes on the medium. Perez, while solid this weekend, hasn't really shown such single lap pace all weekend, and admitted to some surprise afterwards. "The most important thing is we are showing progress," Perez told media after the session. "I never expected to be here today, you know, where we were yesterday. "We've been improving, but it's just important to be P2 and I should have been on pole today. "I did a mistake on my final, my final corner. I think it's everything positive but we just have to make sure that we keep progressing, and tomorrow is what matters. "I think anything can happen tomorrow. We are in a different strategy to Lewis and Max so it's gonna be interesting to see what we can do. And yet most important, get those points and get that learning, which is priority at the moment."
