Red Bull's Sergio Perez and McLaren's Oscar Piastri suffered humiliating exits in Q1 for qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Perez, in front of his home crowd, was 18th fastest in the classification after an opening lap some 1.532s slower than team-mate Max Verstappen.

He was complaining of brake issues aboard his RB20, but subsequent laps could not propel the Mexican clear of the elimination zone.

It is the first time since he has been driving for Red Bull that he has not qualified in the top-five at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

He was joined in the elimination zone by McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who had a lap-time deleted for track limits at Turn 12 - the left-hander entering the stadium section.

Another push lap moved Piastri to P15, but he was dumped out after Kevin Magnussen saved himself.

Piastri, who had topped FP3, had been the only driver to make Q3 at every grand prix in the season.

They were joined by Franco Colapinto in 16th, Esteban Ocon in 19th and Zhou Guanyu in 20th in not making Q2 as Lando Norris topped the segment.
