Oscar Piastri has revealed the tyre dilemma he and McLaren faced in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix, as he took third.
Piastri was the highest-placed driver to use Pirelli's C6 tyre in Q3, with front-row pair George Russell and Max Verstappen both on the C5 medium tyre as he took third, four places ahead of team-mate Lando Norris.
Piastri had largely struggled throughout the weekend, with Norris generally ahead through qualifying, but the Australian now has the chance to stretch his 10-point lead at the top of the drivers' standings, aided by his tyre call.
"To be honest, after how practice went, I'm pretty happy with myself at the moment," Piastiri explained.
"It was a nice turnaround, but there was always a question of: 'Do you want a medium [tyre] or do you want a soft for Q3?'
"We went for the soft because we are having a lot of problems, and just wanted to keep things consistent, so I am pretty happy with third, which is a bit different this year, but I will definitely take it."
