Oscar Piastri reveals FIA discussion verdict after Max Verstappen safety car incident

Oscar Piastri has revealed to holding talks with the FIA following his costly penalty at the British Grand Prix earlier this month.

The Australian was issued a 10-second time penalty for erratic driving behind the safety car in wet conditions, which involved a hard braking manoeuvre as the field prepared to restart.

The penalty dropped him behind team-mate Lando Norris in the latter stages, allowing the home favourite to take victory.

Piastri defended his driving and insisted it is no different to what has been done in the past.

“I obviously looked through it with the team afterwards,” he told the media when asked by RacingNews365 whether he had reviewed the incident.

“There’s been a lot of learning on both sides. I still have my feelings about it, I guess.

“But it's in the past now, and I've moved on. For me, it was a manoeuvre that had been done before, by myself in some cases, but other drivers as well in the past, in an identical manner.

“If it needs to be penalised now, then that's fine. I know that for the future. Obviously, immediately after the race, I was frustrated.”

After holding constructive talks with the FIA, Piastri highlighted that he now understands what is deemed acceptable by the stewards should a similar situation arise in the future. 

“We’ve had discussions with the FIA, and like I said, I think there was learning on both sides about how that situation could have been handled differently,” he said.

“So for myself, I won’t brake as hard next time. It's as simple as that.

“The threshold is a bit clearer on where that stands. So I will just simply not brake as hard.”
