Lando Norris suffered a shock exit from Mexico City Grand Prix qualifying, after he elected to abort his fastest lap in Q1.
Both McLarens were in the drop zone during the dying moments of the session, with Oscar Piastri managing to improve his time to second quickest.
While Norris was on his final lap, Fernando Alonso spun and continued at Turn 4, causing a brief yellow flag in the area.
This prompted Norris to abort his lap time, causing him to get knocked out of the session early after the gamble by the team for the first runs on Medium tyres backfired forcing the late switch to Softs that ultimately failed.
It is just the third Q1 elimination for Norris this season, the other two occasions being at the races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
The elimination means he will start from 19th on the grid behind Lance Stroll.
