Lando Norris was the unfortunate victim in an opening lap multi-car collision at the first corner of the Miami Sprint race. Norris entered the opening corner safely but was tagged on the exit by Fernando Alonso, following a concertina effect. Lewis Hamilton ploughed into the corner aggressively from P12 and went into Lance Stroll, who went into his Aston Martin team-mate as a result. The outcome was Alonso tagging Norris, although the stewards quickly judged that no investigation was necessary. Norris was forced to retire from the sprint following the collision, which triggered an early safety car at the Miami International Autodrome. Stroll also retired. Alonso continued but fell to the bottom of the order. At the front and it was Max Verstappen who made the strongest start from pole position.
