Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix 2024

Multiple drivers to face stewards after Mexican GP first practice

It was a tricky, red-flag hit first session in Mexico City.

Three drivers - including two rookies - have been summoned to see the stewards following a red-flag-hit first practice session for the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The second of those, 22 minutes into the hour-long running at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, has led to the stewards being forced to investigate.

That was sparked by Williams' Alex Albon running into Ollie Bearman, standing in for Charles Leclerc at Ferrari as part of the rules surrounding young drivers being allowed F1 track time.

Through the high-speed sweep in the middle sector, Albon emerged out of Turn 9 where he encountered a slow Bearman, who had moved offline in a bid to give the Thai-British driver room given he was on a flying lap.

Albon, however, encountered a snap of oversteer exiting Turn 9, resulting in the right rear of his Williams smacking into the front left of the SF-24, forcing him into a 360-degree spin that culminated in him crashing into a barrier.

Albon described Bearman as an "idiot" over team radio.

Both drivers have been asked to give their version of events to the stewards.

As a consequence of the incident, Robert Shwartzman, deputising for Stake's Zhou Guanyu, was caught overtaking under yellow flags, and must answer that charge.
