The Argentinian footballer beat Max Verstappen to the award after his recent triumph in the World Cup.

Lionel Messi has won the 2023 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award, beating last year's winner Max Verstappen.

The Dutchman was nominated again for the prestigious award after winning his second F1 title in 2023, but was beat by Messi who recently triumphed in the World Cup with the Argentina international team.

The award has previously been won by F1 drivers Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, and Lewis Hamilton.

Red Bull has also been nominated in the World Team of the Year category, up against the Argentina men’s football team, the England women’s football team, France men’s rugby team, the Golden State Warriors and Real Madrid men’s football team.
