McLaren has issued a stark warning to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri after the two title rivals collided on the last lap of the Singapore Sprint, with team principal Andrea Stella making clear that nobody at the team is bigger than the collective cause.
The incident wrecked what should have been a productive sprint for the Woking-based outfit. McLaren went into the 100 km race at Marina Bay in position to bank solid points at a track where victory was out of reach, only for Norris and Piastri to make contact at Turn 5 and both spin.
Norris salvaged just a single point in eighth, while Piastri failed to finish, although was classified 14th due to the timing of the accident.
Stella did not hide his frustration, telling Sky F1 that the situation would be dealt with behind-the-scenes in private.
"The sprint race was a race that was giving us some good points in a moment in which we are not in condition to win," begun Stella. "Still, we were in condition to score good points, and we saw two McLarens having contact, basically going out of the race.
"Lando scored one point, but definitely that's not enough. And seeing two McLarens making contact like that is simply not acceptable. This is something that we will discuss with our drivers. We will do it in private.
"We will reiterate that the team interest is far bigger than any of us. There's no ego, there's no person that is bigger than the interest of the McLaren Formula 1 team.
"This will be reiterated. I'm sure, like always, there will be conversations that will lead to the team being more united and even stronger."
Lando Norris insists both McLaren drivers to blame
Norris, who leads the McLaren intra-team battle, confirmed that himself and Piastri had already sat down to clear the air once the dust settled on the sprint.
Asked what the discussion with the team was like, Norris told select media, including RacingNews365, that the mood in the camp was far from celebratory.
"As you probably expect, no one's very happy. I'm not happy, Oscar wasn't happy," said Norris. "None of us wanted it to go that way.
"There was things both of us could have done better, and yeah, we spoke about it and we moved on."
