The #80 Mercedes is heading towards victory at the Nürburgring 24 Hours after mechanical woes ended Max Verstappen's hopes of triumph in the German endurance classic.

The car is expected to make a brief ceremonial appearance on track during the final stages as a gesture to the fans who have supported Verstappen throughout the weekend, but it is out of the running for all intents and purposes.

With Verstappen's effective retirement, the sister #80 Mercedes inherited the race lead under the guidance of Maro Engel.

However, the German driver soon reported issues with a malfunctioning button, prompting the team to call him in earlier than planned for precautionary measures.

Schiller climbed aboard following an extended pit stop that included a steering wheel change, taking over driving duties as the car adopted a more conservative approach to protect its newfound advantage.

The #80 Mercedes crew has since settled into a measured rhythm, building their margin over the chasing pack. Its nearest competitor, the #84 Lamborghini, trails by over six minutes/

Fabian Engstler's challenge took a significant blow when race officials handed him an 86-second penalty for violating Code 60 regulations, effectively removing the Lamborghini from realistic contention.
