Marko questions F1 Netflix show: 'Nothing to do with reality'

Is Drive to Survive necessary for F1 now? Red Bull's Motorsport Advisor has his doubts.

Red Bull Motorsport Advisor Helmut Marko has questioned whether Netflix docuseries Drive to Survive remains necessary. The fly-on-the-wall look at the sport first hit the streaming service in 2019 and continues to open a new pathway into F1 for an emerging audience. The records show the Netflix show has been a huge success, with venues around the world breaking attendance records as fans flock to circuits to catch a glimpse of their new heroes. But Drive to Survive has not come without controversy – Mercedes and Ferrari initially refused to take part, paving the way for Red Bull to become the leading light of the paddock for the show. Yet artistic license surrounding storylines led to a number of drivers becoming disillusioned with the operation. Max Verstappen has made his return having snubbed filming following his portrayal in the opening season.

Nothing to do with reality

Speaking to Motorsport-Magazin , Marko explained: "Viewership in Formula 1 is increasing dramatically. We're talking about a 20 percent increase in ratings." Questioning the legitimacy and necessity for the show, he added: "Some may know the Netflix series, but this has nothing to do with reality. "It has created a breakthrough for Formula 1 in America and as long as the viewership and interest is there, you can debate whether it makes sense or is necessary."
