Helmut Marko was unsurprised by Ferrari's one-lap performance in Azerbaijan, but was cautious ahead of the Grand Prix. Ferrari claimed an unexpected Pole Position - their first of the season - on the Baku streets, with the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez lining up second and third. It was a sharp turnaround from their low-key start to the season, with Ferrari having had their worst start to a season for several years. Red Bull's Motorsport Advisor Helmut Marko was left unsurprised by Ferrari's one-lap pace, but hoped that Red Bull's race pace would once again triumph on Sunday. "The Ferrari engine is the strongest engine and over one lap they can compete at the front with full power," Marko told ORF . "I hope they can't do that in the race," he added.
Marko expect Alonso fightback
With regular podium visitor Fernando Alonso unable to get close to Ferrari or Red Bull, the Aston Martin driver is at risk of ending his podium streak. However, the Austrian expects the two-time World Champion to be closer on Saturday's Sprint day, but didn't hold much hope for Mercedes. "I think Alonso will be closer, he simply had some problems today," added Marko. "The gap to the rest is big, Mercedes is already nine tenths [behind]."
