George Russell fights back as Franco Colapinto sparks mayhem - Azerbaijan GP winners & losers

George Russell held off a late charge from Max Verstappen to win an Azerbaijan Grand Prix heavily disrupted by two safety cars, with a Turn 1 pile-up on the first restart wiping out both Alpine drivers and Lando Norris in one move.

Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar took his first 'proper' podium on his return from injury, while Haas banked another double-points finish courtesy of Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman.

Here are the winners and losers from Baku.

Winner - George Russell

Russell converted pole into victory, building a lead of more than 10 seconds before Alex Albon's Turn 5 crash brought out the first safety car.

The Mercedes driver then had to defend twice from restarts, and nearly came unstuck on the final lap when he lifted for a yellow flag at Turn 15 and lost turbo power, letting Verstappen close to within 0.196 seconds at the chequered flag.

It was Russell's eighth win of his F1 career, his third this season, and his first lights-to-flag success. The British driver came so close to a 'super' grand chelem after topping the first two practice sessions, and all three qualifying sessions en route to taking pole before claiming the fastest lap en route to victory. Only Verstappen denied him late on in FP3.

Russell has now closed the gap on team-mate Kimi Antonelli to 66 points at the top of the drivers' standings. It was a nervy finish, but a win is a win.

Winner - Isack Hadjar

Hadjar delivered his best weekend since returning from a six-week wrist injury, running an effective offset strategy on soft tyres and staying close to team-mate Verstappen throughout the opening stint.

Red Bull's decision to hold track position rather than swap the pair paid off once the safety cars fell his way as he capitalised when Oscar Piastri fumbled a restart, moving past the McLaren into third.

The result, achieved days after his Red Bull contract for next year was confirmed, was his first genuine podium finish, given the confusion around the one scored in Monaco. It was a timely reminder of why Red Bull backed him for next year.

Winner - Haas

Haas again turned chaos into points, starting both cars on soft tyres before pitting Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman for mediums under the lap 30 safety car.

The pair then rode the second round of restarts to move up into eighth and ninth, a double finish that pushed Haas 10 points clear of Audi in the battle for seventh in the constructors' table.

This is becoming a pattern for the American outfit, which remains among the sharpest strategic operators in the midfield on chaotic afternoons. Baku suited them perfectly.

Loser - Alpine

Alpine's afternoon fell apart at the worst possible moment when Franco Colapinto locked up under braking on the first restart and collided with team-mate Pierre Gasly into Turn 1.

Both cars were eliminated on the spot, and the clash also collected Lando Norris, turning what had been a promising midfield battle into a written-off weekend for the Enstone squad.

Colapinto was handed a five-place grid penalty for the upcoming Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia in place of a 10-second time penalty he could not serve in Baku.

It was a double DNF that could scarcely have been more costly, with Alpine losing ground on Racing Bulls in the constructors' standings, and what next for Colapinto after team boss Flavio Briatore said he would "consider what course of action" to take with his driver?

Loser - Lando Norris

Norris' weekend soured in qualifying, when a moment off-track triggered a yellow flag and compromised his final lap, leaving him down in fifth on the grid.

Worse followed in the race, as he was collected in the Turn 1 pile-up caused by Colapinto's lock-up, ending his afternoon immediately.

The McLaren driver was later scathing about the standard of driving that caused the incident and called for the FIA to consider race bans for such carelessness.

Such comments later resulted in Norris being the latest target in F1 for online abuse from angry Colapinto fans.

Loser - Alex Albon

Albon's race ended in a barrier at Turn 5 on lap 31, an accident that triggered the first safety car and reshuffled the entire complexion of the afternoon.

With the Williams of Albon and team-mate Carlos Sainz sporting a raft of updates, ending the race with a heavily damaged car was a major setback for the team, which has endured a torrid season.

Whilst Sainz at least managed to salvage a point for the team by finishing 10th, ending a run of nine races outside the points, Albon extended his own pointless streak to nine with a weekend to forget in Baku.
