Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has stated the atmosphere at the Milton Keynes-based team is “tense” following Max Verstappen's difficult weekend in Hungary.

Verstappen publicly condemned Red Bull's strategy over team radio en route to fifth place, using multiple profanities over the team radio to voice his displeasure with the decisions made during the race.

The difficult outing came as Red Bull face increased pressure from rival teams including McLaren, who secured a 1-2 finish at the race.

“The atmosphere is a bit tense,” Marko said to Kleine Zeitung.

“It [the race] got out of hand and started with the fact that he didn't think he should have given back the position after Turn 1. Then one thing led to another.”

Verstappen was involved in several heated discussions with race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, who has been working with the Dutchman since he joined the team in 2016.

Marko revealed the duo sat down to talk about the race after the chequered flag.

“The two of them sat down together and discussed it.”

Verstappen set for Belgian GP grid penalty

RacingNews365 understands Verstappen is set to take a 10-place grid penalty at Spa-Francorchamps for fitting a fifth internal combustion engine.

Marko stated a podium result still should be on the cards - but admitted it will be a challenging task with Red Bull's rivals now contesting it for pace.

“It's a tough season for him [Verstappen] and he's only human,” Marko said. “We're still in the lead, but we're no longer so superior.

“It could also be difficult for Verstappen at Spa, as a change of power unit is imminent.

“There is a possibility and then it would be ten places back on the grid. But I hope that overtaking will be easier than in Hungary.

“The podium is possible, but it will be much more difficult than in previous years.’
