Magnussen: Austin shows FIA wasn't consistent with everyone

The Haas driver has been shown the black and orange flag a couple of times this season, and believes the approach from the FIA with Fernando Alonso was not consistent in Austin.

Kevin Magnussen has offered his viewpoint on the post-race penalty given to Fernando Alonso which was successfully appealed by Alpine. Initially Alonso was given a post-race time penalty after Haas lodged a protest claiming his car was unsafe to drive, due to a loose wing mirror from contact with Lance Stroll that eventually detached in the closing stages of the race. The 30-second penalty dropped him from P7 to P15 in the final order, but Alpine argued that Haas lodged their protest of the result outside of the 30-minute window. After requesting a right to review the stewards decision, Alpine managed to get the penalty overturned due to 'significant new evidence' being presented that stated Haas could've lodged a protest in the time period via a handwritten method.

Black and orange flag needs to be more consistent

Regardless of the outcome being specific to the timing of the protest rather than the offence itself, Magnussen believes there needs to be more consistency from the FIA. Race Control has the ability to display the black and orange flag which states a car must pit to make repairs. It's mainly done on safety grounds and has been something that was issued to Magnussen when he had loose parts during the Singapore Grand Prix. "If it's actually because of safety, then I get the safety first [aspect]. That I fully understand," he told media, including R acingNews365.com . "I have a feeling that it's a bit over the edge to call us in if we have these little things flapping. But if the front wing is flapping or the whole thing, or something like that, then I get it. "But anyway, I'm good with the the direction they take as long as it is the same for everyone. "Clearly, in Austin, it wasn't the same for everyone. I've had this flag three times this year. I'm annoyed with myself for damaging the front wing, but still got these flags. "Then it's not fair when you see a race in Austin where quite a few cars have damage and they don't get it [black and orange flag]."
