Looming Singapore jeopardy could instigate strategic mayhem for F1 teams

The threat of a safety car or VSC at the Singapore Grand Prix puts what ought to be a comfortable one-stop strategy at risk.

The looming threat of a safety car or virtual safety car at the Singapore Grand Prix could throw F1 teams' race strategies into disarray, with Pirelli outlining the preferred tyre options for Sunday's 62-lap contest.

Marina Bay Street Circuit has produced a safety car in four of the past six grands prix, equating to a 67 per cent probability, while the chance of a virtual safety car stands at 33 per cent over the same period.

That prospect could prove decisive in a race where overtaking is difficult and track position is particularly valuable, potentially forcing teams to reconsider their plans should an early neutralisation present an opportunity for a cheaper pit stop.

Pirelli head of motorsport Dario Marrafuschi expects a one-stop strategy to be the preferred approach under normal racing conditions, with the soft and medium compounds emerging as the strongest combination.

"The severity of the circuit, both in terms of layout, which is mainly a traction and braking circuit, and in terms of roughness, is shifting this event toward the soft side of the tyre choice," Marrafuschi told media, including RacingNews365.

"This was clear since Friday. Actually, it was clear also to all the teams because they started on Friday with a hard set of tyres to make the setup work both on the power units and on the mechanics of the car...

"The hard [tyre] choice is likely something which should not be the main decision for the grid."

Why the one-stop will be king

Marrafuschi outlined the expected pit stop window for the leading strategy, while explaining how an alternative compound could become relevant depending on race circumstances.

"We expect it will be a one-stop race in case of non-authorisation [of the safety car or wet weather protocols], of course... a one-stop race with the soft and medium as the primary choice. Pit stop window opening at Lap 26 out of 62 laps," he said.

"In case you go for a hard choice, maybe for a second stint, the window could open at Lap 23.

"I think the hard choice for the second half of the race may be something that could be considered in case of a safety car in the early laps.

"But also in that case, in my opinion, even though there will be a safety car in the early laps, I think some teams will challenge the medium as well because I think the level of wear will allow teams to do so."

Despite the potential for strategic variation, Pirelli does not expect a conventional two-stop race to be competitive, even if teams opt for the harder compound.

"The last choice for the one-stop is the medium and hard, which overall is five seconds slower than the best one, which is soft and medium," he added.

"And even though it is not recommended, it is still better than a two-stop strategy, which is 10 seconds slower over the race distance. So we don't consider two stops being an option in case of a standard race."
