McLaren kept its cards very close to its chest, and opted against setting a time to challenge the top spots on the leaderboard.
Charles Leclerc suffered a disastrous first practice and will miss second practice after crashing in the first 15 minutes of FP1, handing Ferrari an impossible repair task. As a result, only 19 drivers will take to the circuit.
Several mistakes were made in first practice on what was a low grip Circuit Gilles Villeneuve; however, the lap times are expected to improve considerably in second practice.
