Lewis Hamilton has expressed his relief after a key mistake in Austrian Grand Prix qualifying.

On the first runs in Q3, Hamilton locked up and ran wide at Turn 3, and did not have sufficient fuel onboard to complete a second push lap on those tyres.

Faced with only a single lap, Hamilton went to provisional pole before being bumped down to third by Charles Leclerc, and then George Russell in the controversial ending following Max Verstappen's crash.

Russell kept his pole, meaning Hamilton will start third, as he reflected on his error and the potential impact it would have on his second run.

"The weekend had been looking good, but in Q3 run one, it was my mistake, and I didn't get the first lap, and that always affects the second lap," Hamilton explained.

"But nonetheless, even just to be that close, given I didn't get the first lap, I'm really happy for that.

"To have the two Ferraris in second and third, I think it is fantastic, and just a reflection of the amazing work that everyone is doing back at the factory.

"Because they are really continuing to push, we brought small bits here, and they worked hard to upgrade our engine for this track.

"I'm just really proud of everybody because you can see how hard everyone's working, and it is starting to pay off."
